In 1880, Bertie and Willoughby Mutual was formed by a group of farmers who were unable to purchase insurance at a reasonable cost and therefore got together to form their own insurance company. In 1898, Clinton Mutual was formed under similar circumstances. These two companies operated independently until 1970 when they amalgamated and Bertie & Clinton Mutual Insurance Company was formed.
We are a member of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association (OMIA), which has a long history of serving the farm mutuals in Ontario.
Bertie & Clinton has paid out claims for many of its members, but we are also protected by our reinsurer, the Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan Inc. (FMRP), of which we are part owners. In the event of an unusually large claim or a catastrophe, we can count on the FMRP.
